For serious research work in India in 2026, Google AI Plus at ₹399 a month is the cheapest rupee-billed entry, and ChatGPT Plus at ₹1,999 adds deep research plus agent mode. Perplexity Pro is the specialist, but Indian users cannot subscribe in rupees on its website, only in USD. Claude Pro’s Research feature also sits at ₹1,999 a month.
Every major vendor now ships something called “deep research”, a mode that runs for minutes rather than seconds, reads dozens of sources, and returns a cited report. What separates them in India is less about raw quality and more about two practical things: which currency you are billed in, and how much you are allowed to run in a day before the tool slows down. Prices below are the ones published by each vendor, with a currency label so you know what will hit your card.

The India payment problem you should sort out first
Before comparing answer quality, check how each vendor will charge you.
Perplexity is the awkward one. Its help centre, updated 16 July 2026, states plainly: “Users in India currently cannot use Indian rupees (INR) for recurring subscriptions on Perplexity.ai and can only subscribe in USD.” So if you buy Pro on the website from India, you are paying $20 a month on an international card, and your bank will add a forex markup of roughly 2–3.5% on top. The rupee-denominated ₹1,999 monthly and ₹19,900 yearly prices exist, but through the Apple App Store India storefront rather than web checkout.
Google and OpenAI are simpler for a rupee budget. Google AI Plus is priced at ₹399 a month directly, and Google Play India states that all prices include GST. ChatGPT Go and Plus are listed in rupees on the India App Store storefront, and OpenAI confirms UPI works for Go and Plus, though not for Pro or Business. Claude Pro shows rupee prices on the India storefront; whether claude.ai web checkout bills in INR from India is not confirmed by any page we could verify, although India is on Anthropic’s supported-countries list.

Who each tool is for
Perplexity Pro suits people whose work is mostly source-finding: journalists, analysts, procurement teams, anyone who needs twenty citations rather than one polished paragraph. Pro adds deep research, frontier model selection, 4,000 bonus credits and document creation. Comet is not a separate subscription tier, it is a per-plan feature limit expressed as “Browser Agent queries”.
Google AI Plus and AI Pro suit students and knowledge workers already living in Gmail, Docs and Drive. AI Plus is the interesting India plan: ₹399 a month, dropping to ₹199 for the first six months, with expanded NotebookLM, more Gemini 3 Pro access, video generation in the Gemini app and Flow, and family sharing for five people. If your research ends in a document, that integration matters more than benchmark scores.
ChatGPT Plus suits generalists who want one subscription to do research, writing and light automation. Deep research and agent mode both sit on Plus, not Go. Claude Pro suits people who research in order to build or write something long. Research ships alongside Claude Code, Cowork, Design and Science on the same ₹1,999 plan, and Anthropic describes Pro as offering at least 5x the usage per session compared to free.
NotebookLM’s place in this
NotebookLM is not a standalone paid subscription. What Google publishes is that AI Plus includes an expanded NotebookLM; the exact free-tier limits are not published by the vendor, so treat any specific number quoted elsewhere with caution. Practically, NotebookLM is what you use when you already have the sources, such as PDFs, lecture notes or annual reports, and want grounded answers from that closed set rather than open-web discovery. It complements Perplexity rather than replacing it.
The 2026 shift to usage windows
The biggest change this year is not price. It is that nobody sells a message count any more.
Claude runs a rolling 5-hour session window plus weekly limits on paid plans, with no fixed message number. Google governs usage with a compute-used model that refreshes every 5 hours, up to a weekly cap. OpenAI says Plus caps “vary based on system conditions”. Perplexity applies weekly limits to Pro Search and caps file uploads at 50 per project.
For a heavy research day, this has a specific consequence. A deep research run is expensive in compute terms, so five or six of them back to back can exhaust a window that would have comfortably absorbed a hundred ordinary chat messages. You may find the tool available but degraded at 4 pm on a deadline day. Plan around it: run the expensive queries early, batch your sources before you start, and keep a second tool on a different vendor’s clock as a fallback. That is a genuine argument for a ₹399 Google plan alongside a ₹1,999 one, rather than buying a single more expensive tier.
Strengths and limitations
Perplexity. Strength: it is the most citation-native of the four, and Max’s 35,000 bonus plus 10,000 monthly credits is the largest research allowance published here. Limitation: the free tier is described by the vendor itself as search only and very limited, the USD-only web billing is a real cost in India, and Max’s top-tier model access explicitly does not apply to the API, so developers should not buy Max expecting API benefits.
Google. Strength: the best rupee price in the category and the widest surface area, covering NotebookLM, Gmail, Docs, video generation and five-person family sharing. Limitation: several headline Ultra features are US-only, Deep Research and Flow are 18+, and the compute-used model means your practical allowance is not something you can plan against precisely. Google’s India launch communication also moved: the launch post said 200 GB for AI Plus, and the current figure is 400 GB.
ChatGPT. Strength: deep research and agent mode on a single ₹1,999 plan, with UPI accepted. Limitation: Go’s ₹399 does not include deep research, Go has no annual billing at all, Plus caps are explicitly variable, and UPI stops working the moment you step up to Pro.
Claude. Strength: Research bundled with a genuinely broad Pro plan, and the only one here with an explicitly published ~15% annual saving in USD ($200/yr against $20/mo). Limitation: the 5-hour window plus weekly cap is the strictest published limit structure of the four, Max is monthly-only, and INR web billing is unverified.
How to decide
- Do you need cited open-web research, or grounded answers from your own documents? Open web points to Perplexity or deep research on ChatGPT and Gemini. Your own documents point to NotebookLM on Google AI Plus.
- Can you tolerate USD billing? If no, Perplexity web checkout is out; use Google or OpenAI, or the App Store India route.
- What is your ceiling? Under ₹500 a month, Google AI Plus at ₹399 (₹199 introductory) is the only plan here with real research capability. ChatGPT Go at the same ₹399 does not include deep research.

- Do you have a heavy day pattern? Two mid-tier plans on different vendors’ usage clocks beat one expensive plan on a single clock.
What has ended
The Airtel offer that gave Indian users Perplexity Pro at no cost has ended. Perplexity’s own help centre states: “The promotional offer ended on January 16, 2026.” Anyone still advertising it as live is out of date.
