OTT Subscription Cost in India (2026): The Real Yearly Numbers

Short answer

A typical Indian household paying for five mainstream services at standard rates spends about ₹12,973 a year — roughly ₹1,081 a month. Most people can cut that by 40–60% without dropping a single service they actually watch, by switching to annual billing, sharing within the household, and rotating instead of stacking.

Every major service: monthly, yearly, and cost per screen

The per-screen column is the one that matters and almost nobody looks at it. Netflix Premium looks expensive at ₹649 a month and is one of the cheapest premium services on this list per person — if four people in your home actually use it. Netflix Mobile at ₹149 looks cheap and is the most expensive per screen on this table, because there is only ever one screen.

The three changes that cut the bill most

1. Pay annually — saves up to 39% on the identical plan

JioHotstar Premium is ₹299 a month, which is ₹3,588 a year. The same plan bought annually is ₹2,199. You save ₹1,389 for changing nothing except the billing cycle. SonyLIV is starker: ₹399 a month is ₹4,788 a year against ₹1,499 annual — a ₹3,289 saving. This is the single biggest lever on this page and it costs you nothing.

The one exception: a service you are subscribing to for one specific show. Pay a month, watch it, cancel.

2. Share within your household — divides the cost by up to 6

Every service here permits sharing inside one home, up to your plan’s screen limit. A ₹2,199 JioHotstar Premium plan split four ways is ₹550 each for the year, about ₹46 a month. YouTube Premium Family at ₹299 covers six people — ₹50 each.

Two rules keep you on the right side of the terms: everyone must be in the same household, and you must stay within the screen limit. Netflix in particular determines a household using IP address, device IDs and account activity, and does not sell an Extra Member add-on in India, so there is no sanctioned way to include someone at a different address.

3. Rotate instead of stacking

Almost every service is month-to-month with no lock-in. Instead of holding five subscriptions all year, hold two and change which two every couple of months as shows release. Five services held all year is ₹12,973. Two services rotated is closer to ₹5,000, and you watch the same amount.

Set a calendar reminder for the day before each renewal. Forgotten auto-renewals are the largest hidden cost in streaming.

The costs people forget to budget for

• Ads on plans you thought were ad-free. Prime Video shows ads on the standard Prime plan; removing them is ₹699 a year or ₹129 a month extra. SonyLIV runs ads on sports and reality shows on every tier, including the ₹1,499 one. JioHotstar Premium runs ads during live content.
• iOS in-app pricing. Buying YouTube Premium inside the iPhone app costs about ₹195 instead of ₹149 on the web — roughly ₹550 a year for pressing the wrong button.
• Sport sold separately. ZEE5’s sport needs the ₹1,699 All Access + Sports pack, not the standard ₹1,499 plan.
• Quality you cannot use. Paying for 4K with a 1080p TV is money burned. ZEE5’s 4K works only on 4K TVs and connected devices, never in a browser.

Three realistic budgets

• ₹100 a month — the minimum viable setup. Apple TV at ₹99. Genuinely good originals, 4K HDR, 6 simultaneous streams.
• ₹300 a month — covers most people. JioHotstar Premium (₹2,199/yr) plus Amazon Prime Annual (₹1,499/yr) = ₹3,698 a year, about ₹308 a month. Hollywood, HBO Max, cricket, films, music and free delivery.
• ₹600 a month — near-complete coverage. Add SonyLIV Premium (₹1,499/yr), a ZEE5 language pack (₹599/yr) and YouTube Premium Family (₹3,588/yr, split six ways).
