For most Indian students, start with the free routes: Notion gives verified college students free Plus, GitHub gives verified students free Copilot Student, and Jio users can get Google AI Pro free for 18 months. Pay only for what free tiers genuinely lack — Perplexity Education Pro at $10/month for research, or QuillBot Premium at ₹334/month billed annually for writing.
Student pricing in 2026 is narrower than most people assume. Several discounts students talk about in college groups either never applied to Indian universities, apply only through a teacher, or have quietly ended.

Who each tool is for
Notion suits the student drowning in notes across five apps. If you have a college email on your institution’s domain, free Plus is the best-value item here. It is not for K-12 students, nor for anyone hoping to verify with a scanned ID card.
GitHub Copilot Student is for anyone taking a programming, data or engineering course, including non-CS majors writing lab scripts.
Perplexity Education Pro is for research-heavy work — literature reviews, dissertations, case studies. For ordinary homework, the free tiers will do.
Google AI Plus is for the student who lives in Google Docs and Gmail. Canva is for the one running a college fest page or a placement portfolio.
QuillBot is for language work: editing your drafts, tightening paragraphs, checking grammar. It is a writing aid, not a route around academic honesty rules — your university’s policy overrides any tool’s marketing.
Pricing in India, including the forex point
Canva and QuillBot bill Indian users in INR on the web. Google prices in INR, and Google Play India states that all prices include GST.
Notion, GitHub Copilot and Perplexity show USD even when loaded from India. Notion’s pricing page explicitly labels “Price in USD”. Perplexity’s help centre, updated 16 July 2026, states that users in India currently cannot use Indian rupees for recurring subscriptions on Perplexity.ai and can only subscribe in USD. Your bank then adds a card forex markup, typically 2 to 3.5 per cent — so $10 Education Pro is that dollar figure plus markup, every month.
There is also an app store versus web split. Perplexity Pro shows ₹1,999/mo and ₹19,900/yr on the Apple App Store India storefront [IN-store], while the web route from India is USD only. ChatGPT Go is ₹399/mo [IN-store] against an $8 list price. Storefront prices are GST-inclusive; web checkout may differ. UPI works for ChatGPT Go and Plus only, not Pro or Business.

Strengths and limitations, tool by tool
Notion
Strengths: free Plus for verified students at accredited colleges and universities is a genuine, self-serve, documented offer, and Plus covers the group-project features that matter.
Limitations: Notion AI is now bundled rather than an add-on, and Free and Plus get only a “Trial of Notion AI”. Full AI — Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search — unlocks at Business, $24/member/mo or $20/member/mo billed yearly [USD]. Custom Agents and Workers are in beta and metered: free to try, then $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits. The student offer therefore gives you an excellent notes app, not an excellent AI assistant. Verification is institutional email only; student IDs are not accepted.
GitHub Copilot Student
Strengths: free, with completions beyond the 2,000-per-month cap that applies to the public Free tier, plus an AI-credit allowance.
Limitations: this is where most guides go wrong. Copilot Student is not free Copilot Pro — verified teachers and maintainers of popular open-source projects get free Copilot Pro, while verified students get Copilot Student. Eligibility is re-evaluated monthly, so a lapsed verification means a lapsed benefit mid-semester. Paid pricing is USD: Pro $10/user/mo, Pro+ $39, Max $100.
Perplexity Education Pro
Strengths: $10/mo with SheerID verification is half the standard $20 Pro price. Pro adds deep research, frontier model selection, 4,000 bonus credits, and document and app creation.
Limitations: USD billing, so forex applies. Perplexity itself describes the free tier as search only with very limited Pro Searches — do not plan a dissertation around it. Pro Search carries weekly limits and there is a 50-file upload cap per project. Comet is not a separate tier; browser agent queries are a per-plan feature limit. One claim still circulating: the Airtel free Perplexity Pro offer ended on 16 January 2026, per Perplexity’s own help centre.
Google AI Plus and the Jio offer
Strengths: ₹199/mo for six months is the cheapest serious AI subscription available to an Indian student, including more Gemini 3 Pro and Nano Banana Pro access, video generation in the Gemini app and Flow, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, expanded NotebookLM, 400 GB storage and family sharing for five. The Jio offer — Google AI Pro free for 18 months for users on eligible Jio 5G plans of ₹349 and above, age 18+, activated in MyJio — is the largest legitimate saving here, stated value around ₹35,100, with no published end date.
Limitations: usage is governed by a compute-used model refreshing every five hours up to a weekly limit, so heavy sessions throttle. Several Ultra-tier benefits are US-only. Deep Research and Flow require you to be 18 or older, excluding many first-years and all school students. Budget for ₹399 after the intro period.
Canva
Strengths: the free tier genuinely handles posters, slides and social posts. Pro at ₹500/mo or ₹4,000/yr — about 33 per cent off annually — adds 3.6 million-plus templates, 141 million-plus premium assets, five Brand Kits and 100 GB of storage.
Limitations: the education story is far narrower than students expect. K-12 students get premium features free through Canva Education, but by teacher invite only. University students get Canva Free unless their institution has Canva for Campus, and there is no self-serve individual student discount. Canva’s AI is a metered allowance — Free is capped at roughly 200 Standard and 20 Premium AI uses, and paid-tier allowances are published only as multipliers. Heavy AI users get pushed to a paid AI Pass add-on.
QuillBot
Strengths: Premium at ₹334/mo billed annually lifts the 125-word paraphrase limit, opens all modes plus custom modes, and adds the Grammar Checker, a Plagiarism Checker metered at 25,000 words per month, an AI Detector, an AI Humanizer, a Summarizer, translation and browser extensions. INR-native, so no forex.
Limitations: no documented student discount, which is odd for a product this student-focused. The headline price assumes a year paid upfront; the monthly rate sits behind sign-in and is not published by the vendor. The free tier’s 125-word cap and six humanizer uses per day make it a demo rather than a workflow.
How to decide
- If you have an institutional college email → claim Notion free Plus first.
- If you write any code for coursework → verify for GitHub Copilot Student, and re-check monthly.
- If you are on a Jio ₹349+ 5G plan and are 18 or older → activate the Google AI Pro offer in MyJio before paying for any general assistant.
- If you are not on Jio and want one paid assistant → Google AI Plus at ₹199/mo intro. Compare the assistants in our ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison for India.
- If your work is research-led → Perplexity Education Pro at $10 with SheerID. See also our AI research tools guide.
- If your main pain is writing English → QuillBot Premium annual.
- If you are in school (K-12) → ask your teacher about Canva Education. Notion’s student offer does not apply to you.
- If money is genuinely tight → run entirely free. The stack below is stronger than most students realise.
Start free, then upgrade
ChatGPT Free, Gemini Free and Claude Free (all ₹0) give you three different assistants at no cost. Running a question past two of them is a reasonable accuracy check.
Canva Free handles most college design work; the AI allowance, not the templates, is the wall you hit. Notion Free is a complete notes and database app if your college email does not verify.
GitHub Copilot Free gives 2,000 completions a month plus Haiku 4.5, GPT-5 mini and the Copilot CLI — not restrictive at a few hundred lines a week.
Gamma Free gives 400 credits at signup with no monthly refresh, capping at 2,000 accumulated, plus 200 per referral, and exports to PDF, PPTX, PNG and Google Slides. Perplexity Free is the weakest — search only, very limited Pro Searches.
Upgrade when you hit a wall you can name: the 125-word paraphrase cap, the 2,000-completion cap, the Canva AI allowance, or Gamma’s non-renewing credits.
Legitimate ways to pay less
All officially documented by the vendors:
- Jio × Google AI Pro — free for 18 months, ₹349+ 5G plans, age 18+, activate in MyJio.
- Google AI Plus intro — ₹199/mo for six months, then ₹399/mo.
- Notion free Plus — verified college students and educators, institutional email only.
- GitHub Copilot — free Copilot Student for verified students; free Copilot Pro for verified teachers and popular open-source maintainers.
- Perplexity Education Pro — $10/mo with SheerID.
- Annual billing — Canva Pro saves about 33 per cent, Claude Pro about 15 per cent, and QuillBot’s ₹334/mo rate is annual-only.
Two claims to ignore: the Airtel × Perplexity Pro offer ended on 16 January 2026, and the India ChatGPT Go free promotion is no longer documented — treat it as ended.

FAQ
Do Indian university students get Canva Pro free? No. Canva’s education programme gives premium features to K-12 students by teacher invite only. University students get Canva Free unless their institution has Canva for Campus. There is no self-serve individual student discount.
Is GitHub Copilot free for students the same as Copilot Pro? No. Verified students receive Copilot Student, which lifts the Free tier’s 2,000-completion cap and adds an AI-credit allowance, but is not full Pro. Verified teachers and popular open-source maintainers receive free Copilot Pro instead, and eligibility is re-evaluated monthly.
Can I verify for Notion’s student plan with my student ID card? No. Notion verifies through institutional email only and states explicitly that it does not accept student IDs or other documentation. Students at accredited colleges and universities are eligible; K-12 is not.
Why is Perplexity charging me in dollars from India? Perplexity’s help centre, updated 16 July 2026, states Indian users cannot currently use INR for recurring subscriptions on Perplexity.ai and can only subscribe in USD. Your bank adds roughly 2 to 3.5 per cent forex markup. The Apple App Store India storefront shows INR prices for Pro instead.
Is the Airtel free Perplexity Pro offer still available? No. Perplexity’s help centre states the promotional offer ended on 16 January 2026. Any listing claiming otherwise is out of date.
What is the cheapest useful paid AI subscription for a student in India? Google AI Plus at ₹199/mo for six months, assuming you are not eligible for the Jio Google AI Pro offer, which is free for 18 months. ChatGPT Go at ₹399/mo [IN-store] is the next step up but does not support annual billing.
