ChatGPT vs Claude in India (2026): Which One Should You Actually Pay For?

At ₹1,999/mo both ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro cost the same in India, so pick on workflow, not price. Choose Claude Pro for coding, long documents and connected work tools, because Claude Code and Cowork are included. Choose ChatGPT Plus for deep research, agent mode and image work. Students on a tight budget should take ChatGPT Go at ₹399/mo instead.

This is the closest matchup in the Indian AI market right now. The mid tiers are priced identically on the Apple App Store India storefront, both vendors sell a very expensive top tier, and both have replaced message counts with usage windows. What separates them is what sits inside the subscription.

Who each tool is for

College student. ChatGPT Go at ₹399/mo is the sensible entry point, because Claude has no cheaper paid tier between Free and ₹1,999/mo Pro. If you are a computer science student who will genuinely use Claude Code for projects, the jump to Claude Pro is defensible, otherwise it is a lot of money for essay help. More options in our roundup of AI tools for students in India.

Freelance creator or writer. ChatGPT Plus is the broader tool because of image work and agent mode. Claude Pro is the better long-form editor: it holds a long brief steadily across a session, which matters when you are rewriting a 4,000-word piece rather than generating fifty captions.

Developer. Claude Pro is the stronger buy at the same rupee price, because Claude Code is bundled into Pro rather than sold separately. That single fact is why many Indian developers pay for Claude first and treat everything else as secondary. Compare the wider field in our guide to AI tools for coding in India.

Researcher or analyst. ChatGPT Plus has the edge, because deep research is an explicit Plus feature. Claude Pro includes Research and Science surfaces of its own, so if your work is reading and reasoning over documents you already hold rather than sweeping the open web, Claude holds up well.

Small-business owner. If your office runs on Microsoft 365, Claude Pro’s Microsoft 365 integration is the deciding feature. If you need one assistant that can also handle multi-step tasks and image generation, ChatGPT Plus is the safer single seat.

Pricing in India, and the forex point

On the Apple App Store India storefront, ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are both ₹1,999/mo, and those storefront prices are GST-inclusive. Claude adds an annual option at ₹19,900/yr, which ChatGPT Plus does not publish on the same storefront. In dollars, Claude Pro is $20/mo or $200/yr, and Anthropic describes the annual rate as roughly 15 per cent off.

Here is the honest caveat. Whether claude.ai web checkout bills Indian customers in rupees is unverified. India is on Anthropic’s supported-countries list, so you can subscribe, but if the web checkout charges you in USD, your bank will add a card forex markup of roughly 2 to 3.5 per cent on top of the converted amount. On a $200 annual plan that is not trivial. The App Store India route removes that uncertainty because the price is quoted in rupees.

OpenAI has the same split. ₹399 and ₹1,999 are India storefront prices, while $8 and $20 are global list prices, and web checkout may differ. OpenAI does support UPI, but only on Go and Plus, not on Pro or Business. Claude publishes no equivalent UPI statement in its pricing documentation, so plan for a card.

Strengths

ChatGPT. The ladder is better designed for Indian budgets. Go at ₹399 gives about ten times the free allowance for messages, uploads and images along with extended memory on GPT-5.2 Instant, and it exists precisely where Claude has nothing. Plus adds deep research, agent mode and broader advanced-model access, which is a meaningful capability jump rather than only more volume.

Claude. Pro is dense with included products. Claude Code, Cowork, Design, Science, Research and Microsoft 365 integration all sit inside the same ₹1,999/mo, and Anthropic states Pro gives at least five times the free tier’s usage per session. For anyone whose day involves code or long structured documents, that bundle is the strongest value on this page. Pro also offers an annual rate, which OpenAI’s Go tier does not.

Limitations

ChatGPT. Plus caps are published only as varying with system conditions, so you cannot forecast a heavy week. Go excludes legacy models and some advanced products, which trips up people who assume it is Plus with fewer messages. There is no annual billing on Go, no documented India student rate, and the earlier India free-Go promotion is no longer documented, so treat it as ended. Blocking UPI on the ₹10,699 and ₹19,900 Pro tiers is a genuine inconvenience for Indian buyers.

Claude. The pricing ladder has a hole in it. There is nothing between Free and ₹1,999/mo, so a student who wants a modest paid upgrade has no option at all. Usage is governed by a rolling five-hour session window plus weekly limits with no fixed message count, and hitting a weekly cap mid-project is a real experience, not a theoretical one. Max is monthly-only, so the heaviest users get no annual discount. And the rupee-billing question on web checkout remains unverified, which is not something a buyer should have to guess about.

How to decide

  • If you write code daily, pick Claude Pro. Claude Code is inside the ₹1,999.
  • If you need deep research or agent mode, pick ChatGPT Plus.
  • If your budget is under ₹500/mo, pick ChatGPT Go. Claude has no tier there.
  • If your workplace runs on Microsoft 365, pick Claude Pro for the integration.
  • If you want to pre-pay and save, pick Claude Pro annual at ₹19,900/yr or $200/yr. ChatGPT Go has no annual option.
  • If you keep hitting session limits on Claude Pro, the next step is Max at ₹12,900/mo, and that is a large jump. Test the ceiling before you commit.

Legitimate ways to pay less in India

There is exactly one documented saving across these two products: Claude Pro’s annual rate, ₹19,900/yr on the India storefront, or $200/yr on the web, which Anthropic describes as about 15 per cent off the monthly price. That is it.

Neither OpenAI nor Anthropic publishes an India student discount, a telecom bundle or a regional SKU for these plans. If you see a listing promising ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro far below these prices, the terms are not coming from the vendor. PremiumKing does not sell ChatGPT or Claude subscriptions, so both have to be bought directly from OpenAI and Anthropic; the marketplace is independent and has no affiliation with either company. Will Claude charge me in rupees or dollars? The App Store India storefront charges in rupees.
