Screens, devices and profiles are three different things
Most confusion about Netflix device limits comes from treating these as one number. They are not.
- Signed-in devices: unlimited. Your phone, laptop, TV and tablet can all be logged in at once. Netflix does not cap this.
- Simultaneous streams: capped by your plan — 1, 1, 2 or 4. Exceed it and the extra device sees a “too many people are using your account” message.
- Download devices: a separate cap on how many devices can hold offline titles. Premium’s 6 is deliberately higher than its 4 screens, for families with more phones than simultaneous viewers.
- Profiles: 5 on every plan, from Mobile up. A profile is a separate watchlist, set of recommendations and maturity setting. Five profiles on a Basic plan still means only one person can watch at a time.
Netflix’s help centre puts the profile limit plainly: “You can have up to 5 profiles on a single Netflix account.” Profiles are not available on devices made before 2013.
Does Netflix work on a smart TV in India?
Yes — on Basic, Standard and Premium. Not on Mobile.
This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in Netflix India pricing. The Mobile plan at ₹149 is restricted to phones and tablets, and Netflix’s own plan page states that “casting or mirroring from a mobile device is not supported on this plan”.
That means all of the following will fail on Mobile:
- Chromecast from your phone to a TV
- AirPlay to an Apple TV
- Screen mirroring from Android or iOS
- Signing in to the Netflix app on a smart TV, Fire TV Stick or set-top box
There is no workaround, because it is enforced on Netflix’s side rather than the device’s. If you want Netflix on a television, ₹199 Basic is the cheapest plan that does it — and that ₹50 is the best-value upgrade Netflix sells in India.
The Mobile plan also has device requirements: Android 7 or later, Fire OS 6 or later, or iOS/iPadOS 12 or later.
How many people can share one Netflix account?
As many as live in your home, up to your plan’s screen limit at any one moment.
The constraint is not really the device count — it is Netflix’s household rule. Netflix defines a household as “a collection of devices connected to the internet at the main place where you watch Netflix”, and detects it from IP address, device IDs and account activity. Netflix downloads: what the limits actually mean
- Download devices are capped, not download counts as such. Mobile and Basic allow 1 device; Standard 2; Premium 6.
- Downloads expire. Most titles stay watchable for a limited window and some expire 48 hours after you press play. Netflix shows the remaining time in your Downloads list.
- Not everything is downloadable. Licensing means some titles are streaming-only.
- Download quality is a setting. Standard quality uses roughly half the storage and data of High.
If you commute or travel and watch offline regularly, the download-device limit is often a better reason to move up a plan than resolution is.
