The framing matters. ChatGPT is a general assistant that can search. Perplexity is a search engine that answers in prose with sources attached. Paying for both is defensible for a researcher, and wasteful for most other people.

Who each tool is for
College student. Perplexity Education Pro at $10/mo with SheerID verification is the cheapest route into a Pro-grade research tool, and citations make it far safer for coursework than an assistant that paraphrases without sources. Freelance creator. ChatGPT Plus is the stronger buy. Perplexity is excellent for the research phase of a script or article, but the drafting, rewriting, image work and agent tasks all sit better with ChatGPT.
Developer. Neither is a coding subscription, though Perplexity Pro’s frontier model selection is useful when you want to compare how different models handle the same problem. Researcher, journalist or analyst. Perplexity Pro is the pick. Sourced answers, deep research and frontier model selection map directly onto the job, and document and app creation helps turn findings into something shareable. Small-business owner. ChatGPT Plus is the more general seat: proposals, emails, summaries and multi-step tasks. Perplexity earns its place if a large part of your week is competitor tracking, supplier research or market scanning where sources matter.
Pricing in India, and the forex point
This is where Perplexity is genuinely worse for Indian buyers, and it should be said plainly. Perplexity’s help centre, updated 16 July 2026, states that users in India currently cannot use Indian rupees for recurring subscriptions on Perplexity.ai and can only subscribe in USD. So the web route from India is $20/mo for Pro and $200/mo or $2,000/yr for Max, and on top of the conversion your bank adds a card forex markup of roughly 2 to 3.5 per cent. A $20 plan is not ₹1,999 by the time it settles, and it moves with the rupee every month.
Rupee billing exists only through the Apple App Store India storefront, where Perplexity Pro is ₹1,999/mo or ₹19,900/yr, GST-inclusive. Annual Max is web-only, so there is no rupee path to it at all.
ChatGPT is cleaner here. ₹399 and ₹1,999 are India storefront prices, UPI works for Go and Plus, and the dollar figures of $8 and $20 are list prices rather than the only option. UPI is not accepted on ChatGPT Pro or Business.
One clarification that saves confusion: Comet is not a separate Perplexity tier. It is a per-plan feature limit expressed as Browser Agent queries, so you do not buy Comet, you get an allowance of it. Also note that perplexity.ai/pricing returns a 404; the live page is perplexity.ai/hub/pricing.

Strengths
ChatGPT. A better-shaped ladder for India, with Go at ₹399 offering roughly ten times the free allowance for messages, uploads and images plus extended memory on GPT-5.2 Instant. Plus adds deep research, agent mode and broader advanced-model access. Rupee billing and UPI support on the two tiers most Indians actually buy remove a lot of friction.
Perplexity. Pro is well specified for research work: deep research, frontier model selection, 4,000 bonus credits, and document and app creation. Max layers on 35,000 bonus credits plus 10,000 monthly credits, the highest limits on the platform and the Brain research preview. Education Pro at $10/mo is a real, officially documented student rate, which OpenAI does not offer in India.
Limitations
ChatGPT. Plus caps vary with system conditions rather than being published, Go excludes legacy models and some advanced products, and there is no annual billing on Go. The Pro tiers at ₹10,699 and ₹19,900 per month are steep, and UPI is blocked on exactly those tiers. There is no documented India student discount, and the earlier India free-Go promotion is no longer documented, so treat it as ended.
Perplexity. The USD-only web billing from India is the headline problem, and it is the vendor’s own stated position rather than a temporary glitch. The free tier is search only with what Perplexity itself calls very limited Pro Searches, so free users are not really evaluating the product. Pro Search carries weekly limits, projects cap at 50 file uploads, and Max’s top-tier model access does not apply to the API. Finally, the Airtel offer that gave Indian users free Perplexity Pro has ended. Perplexity’s help centre states the promotional offer ended on 16 January 2026, so any page still advertising it is out of date.
How to decide
- If you need sources and citations on every answer, pick Perplexity Pro.
- If you need one assistant for writing, reasoning, images and multi-step tasks, pick ChatGPT Plus.
- If you are a verified student, pick Perplexity Education Pro at $10/mo. Nothing else here is cheaper for Pro-grade research.
- If your budget is under ₹500/mo, pick ChatGPT Go at ₹399.
- If you want to avoid dollar billing and forex markup entirely, pick ChatGPT, or buy Perplexity Pro through the India App Store storefront in rupees.
- If you do both research and production work all week, run Perplexity Pro for the reading and ChatGPT Plus for the writing, and accept that you are paying twice.
Legitimate ways to pay less in India
Two documented routes exist, both on the Perplexity side. Education Pro is $10/mo for students who verify through SheerID, which is half the standard Pro price. Annual billing also cuts the rate: ₹19,900/yr on the India App Store storefront for Pro, or $2,000/yr for Max on the web.
The Airtel free Pro offer is over. Perplexity states it ended on 16 January 2026, and there is no replacement telecom bundle published. On the OpenAI side there is no India discount, no student rate and no annual option on Go. PremiumKing lists a Perplexity Pro yearly product in its AI tools category and does not sell ChatGPT subscriptions; it is an independent Indian marketplace with no affiliation to Perplexity or OpenAI, so read the listing terms before buying.
